“The overall impact of COVID-19 has been minimal on a day to day basis as we currently only have a small number of residents. The biggest impact is that we are closed to admissions and also having a new roof replacement which unfortunately is on hold as the contractors were furloughed before it was finished.
Initially staff morale was quite low as we were scared of what might be ahead of us, we were receiving information constantly and a lot of changes had to be made in the way we worked.
The positives are that all staff have embraced the challenge together and have been flexible to ensure all shifts are covered.
We have been fully supported from our local community especially the Coop who deserve a big “Thank You” for making sure we got a daily supply of bread when our contractor could not.
It was very difficult for the residents at first when we had to close the home to visitors. We made an early decision to isolate and enforce social distancing as much as possible but they have been very positive about this apart from not being able to see their family which does have a big impact on everyone. All families have been very supportive and we have made sure all residents who wished to could face time whenever they wanted to and one family have been very generous and bought us a brand new I pad so we can continue to keep connected. Children from Alston Moor Federation School made cards and rainbows for all the residents that can be seen in our large front window and we had fun making our 3 scarecrows.
Cumbria County Council have been very supportive keeping in touch every day and ensuring we have always got a supply of PPE stock. It was very frustrating for staff to watch the daily media coverage discussing testing for staff when it was not actually available for us until recently.
On a personal note I would like to say how proud I am to be the manager of Grisedale Croft, I have been here 36 years and have to say this has been the biggest challenge of all. I would like to thank my great staff team, whom have worked hard to keep our residents safe and whatever it is we are doing, “ITS WORKING” We are hoping to lift some of the isolation restrictions soon yet still keep our social distancing.”
